Challenge

The challenge was to modernize the University of Arizona’s visual identity while honoring its rich history and diverse community. The project required balancing cutting-edge design elements with a deep sense of tradition, ensuring that the brand resonated with current students, alumni, and prospective audiences alike. Additionally, the goal was to create a unified visual language across print, digital, and experiential platforms that could seamlessly adapt to the university’s wide range of initiatives and audiences.

Approach

To bridge the University of Arizona’s rich heritage with its forward-looking vision, we developed a design system that was both dynamic and deeply rooted in its identity. We combined bold typography, immersive digital experiences, and a cohesive visual language that spanned print, web, and environmental design. Every element was crafted to evoke pride, engagement, and a sense of belonging, ensuring the brand felt both timeless and future-focused.

Approach

To bring the brand to life, we reimagined the brand identity from the ground up.
We began by creating a fluid combination of vigorous sign and wordmark—the central elements of the logo are fruit and location that work as replacements to double “O” and form a heart shape at the same time. With two interplaying circles, it was a subtle visual nod to the idea of balance. The typeface has geometric shapes with soft corners to match the soft sign edges of the wordmark. We built out the art direction aiming to meet the neighborhood’s expectations. Color palettes in energetic tones connect the brand to the vibrant San Diego community. Imagery highlighted an emotional experience, while the brand tone remains approachable, friendly, and elevated.
